Rio Waida Wins In Manly, Australia – Biggest Event Win By An Indonesian Surfer.
Bali’s Rio Waida has just defeated Australian, Ryan Callinan in the final of the GWM Sydney Surf Pro. It’s the biggest contest victory of the 22 year-old’s career and the first time an Indonesian surfer has won a 10,000 point competition.
Starting with 96 competitors, it was a stacked international field, featuring the likes of Julian Wilson, Owen Wright, Leonardo Fioravanti and Conner Coffin. Nevertheless, Rio surfed his way through to the last day, dropping a 9.5 ride in the final, ultimately defeating Callinan 17.73 to 15.70.
Rio wasn’t getting too caught up in the moment in the beachside interview directly after his victory though, telling the interviewer “I’m going to G-Land tomorrow, already thinking about qualifying (CT), but yeah have to stay focused. This is not a comfortable zone yet, I have to focus again and get a good result again, job not done”
Rio had plenty of support on the beach, none more enthusiastic than fellow Indonesian competitor Ketut Agus.
With countless hours honing his skills in the long hollow lefts of Bali's Bukit, he’s a really good chance of going deep into the draw at G-Land. The waiting period for the CT event in Java kicks off in just a few days on the 28th of May.
